Rotary Print Head Meters
Off Market Deadline: December 31, 2006
The USPS now requires that any rotary meter without an enhanced security feature be upgraded to include a timeout feature, which automatically shuts down a meter if it is not used within a specific period of time. The following questions and answers are designed to help you better understand this requirement.
Why is the enhanced security feature being mandated?
The enhanced meter security with the timeout feature automatically shuts off a meter when not used over an extended period of time. This feature will help ensure the security of a user's postal funds. Many meters that go unused are susceptible to abuse in the workplace and offer opportunities for people to take advantage of unauthorized postage in the company.
How do I know if my current meter has the enhanced security feature?
If you rent a new meter from MMS, it will have the enhanced security feature, as all Hasler products comply with U.S. Postal Service regulations and requirements. As a matter of fact, since January 1, 2003, Hasler required their dealers to supply customers with only those meters that have an enhanced security feature. However, several older Hasler meter models do not have the timeout feature and must be replaced. Please refer to our Meter Migration Mandate Schedule for a complete list of those Hasler products that require replacement.
Customers of non-Hasler products can also contact MMS for assistance in helping them through the replacement process.
The USPS has established a deadline of December 31, 2006 for all rotary postage meters to have the enhanced security (Timeout) feature. If your meter does not have the feature by that date, your meter must be removed from service.
